Episode 290 - Graminy

Founded in 2010, Graminy seeks to fuse the classical and grassroots tradi- tions, from Bach to bluegrass, from Co- pland to Celtic, from Gershwin to native American, from Kodaly to klezmer, and more. Drawing on all these styles, Graminy composes and arranges all its music and calls it Class-Grass.

Graminy’s music focuses on themes of ecology and place. The name derives from the botanical name for the grass family, Gramineae, as their music draws on the entire family of grassroots tradi- tions, from all places and ecologies.

Their  new CD, “Germinations: A Blue- grass Symphony in D” has been nominated for awards in several categories at this year’s MAMA Awards (Madison Area Music Awards).

Episode 248 - Patchouli

Sparkling acoustic sounds and powerful contagious chemistry, Patchouli’s down-to-earth, hopeful songwriting is “New American Folk” blending elements of folk, pop, flamenco and jazz with world beat rhythms. Their sound has been described as “the harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel meet the guitar brilliance of the Gipsy Kings. After 12 years of non-stop touring and the release of their 15th CD, "Terra Guitarra: Dragonfly", Patchouli has truly earned the title, “the hardest working folk duo in America”.

Widely recognized as one of Madison's (and Wisconsin's) best guitarists, Masino has played with dozens of bands from the midwest and is featured on the Gregg Clemons LP on Nemperor CBS Records (1980). He was a finalist in the Jimi Hendrix Electric Guitar Competition 1999 (Memphis) and has opened for a long list of national bands. During the early 1980's John lived in New York City playing shows and worked as studio musician. We're thrilled to have him on the show!
